Rice has constituted the staple diet of Thailand for centuries. So old is the tradition of growing and harvesting this crop that individual grains have been found within ancient pieces of pottery and brick dating back to the 6th Century! The tradition of rice is truly a rich and varied one with multiple different kinds of rice, preparation methods, applications (for example, in the creation of rice vinegar flour, cakes, wine and noodles) and of course, countless recipes to use these products in.

Jasmine rice is a long grained variety, which has a pearly white luster, soft fluffy texture and the delicate fragrance of the flower after which it is named. Jasmine rice is arguably one of the most popular varieties of this grain type and is eaten with just about every Southeastern Asian dish, from hot and creamy curries to fresh and zingy sea food salads.

Jasmine rice is, however, by no means restricted to complimenting Thai cuisine alone, but has in fact become so popular all over the world that it is preferred by many over the bland and low nutrition instant rice that crams our convenient store’s shelves. Jasmine rice, with its fluffy texture and delicious aroma, is increasingly being used as the starch component of meals of absolutely any cultural heritage, from east to west and north to south!

Here are some steps to prepare it.

  • Rinse 2 cups of Jasmine Rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
  • In a pot, combine the rinsed rice with 2 cups of water.
  • Boil the rice, then lower the heat to a simmer, cover, and let it cook for 15-20 minutes or until the water is absorbed and the rice reaches a tender consistency.
  • Fluff the rice with a fork and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.
